Alcohol & Kombucha

Kombucha is a fermented tea that has been enjoyed for centuries and has gained popularity recently due to its many health benefits. However, one question often arises whether kombucha contains alcohol, and if so, how much. In this blog post, we'll explore the relationship between kombucha and alcohol. We'll also discuss how Zentient Culture is experimenting with alcoholic kombucha.

Firstly, it's important to note that not all kombucha contains alcohol. The amount of alcohol in kombucha can vary depending on several factors, including the fermentation time, temperature, and sugar content.

Commercially produced Kombucha typically contains trace amounts of alcohol, usually less than 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV) and is suitable for consumption by people of all ages.

Beverages containing less than 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV) are considered non-alcoholic beverages according to the Australian & New Zealand Food Standards Code (FZANZ). Interestingly, there are many products including ripe fruits and juice that contain trace amounts of alcohol naturally, which is why a alcohol content of 0.5% or less is classified as non-alcoholic. Please note that homemade Kombucha can have slightly elevated alcohol in levels ranging from 0.5% to 3% due to the brew strength, fermentation conditions and other environmental factors.

In addition, there is now a growing market for alcoholic kombucha. Producers achieve alcoholic kombucha containing more than 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV) either by adding alcohol e.g. Gin or Vodka to regular non-alcoholic kombucha or by adding extra yeast to the kombucha fermentation process and naturally brewing additional alcohol by yeast fermentation. At Zentient Culture we are currently experimenting with alcoholic kombucha. Our alcoholic kombucha contains 5% ABV, which is similar to the alcohol content in beer.

In summary, commercial kombucha typically contains trace amounts of alcohol, however their is a rapidy growing alcoholic kombucha market segment. At Zentient Culture, we are currently exploring this area, and we believe that alcoholic kombucha can offer a unique and enjoyable drinking experience. However, it's essential to be mindful of alcohol consumption and to enjoy alcoholic drinks in moderation. As with everything in life, balance is key, and we encourage our customers to drink responsibly and enjoy our kombucha in a way that supports their health and well-being.
